Laptop Suggestions, Advice, or Recommendations?

It's about time for me to upgrade my laptop and am soliciting any recommendations/advice you, my faithful blog reading audience of six, care to share. I use the laptop for User Group talks, conferences, and as the presentation/demo machine for my classes and training. In total, it gets used maybe once or twice a week for a total average of maybe four hours/week. That's the only time the laptop is on. I do all my "real" work/development on a desktop.

Currently I have an older Dell I bought four years ago with 512 MB of RAM. It can crawl at times with a couple Visual Studio 2005 instances running, SQL Server Management Studio up, a couple browsers going, and so on.

I'd like to strike a nice balance between performance and portability, but there's no need to pay a premium for an "ultra-light." Moreover, since I only upgrade my laptop once every four or five years, I'd like something that's still capable (albeit slower, for sure) of handling Visual Studio 2010.

It's been so long since I've been in the market for a laptop and I've yet to start researching prices/specs, but thought I'd put out a request for comments and feedback. My budget is in the $1,500-$2,000 range.

Any comments, advice, or suggestions are most welcome.

ASUS makes some nice models. I bought the W3J and I'm quite happy with it.

ASUS manufactures Mac laptops for Apple, and has been one of the top-tier Taiwanese OEMs for the last decade or so. The quality is there.

I've bought a Dell Inspirion 9400 recently. Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB of ram, 17' display. Nice stuff. You cvan also check if you can buy Giga Byte laptops (not available in UK unfortunatelly).

For the range $1500 - $2000 you should be able to buy a new laptop with at least 2Gb memory and to be honest, how much CPU time is consumed these days? So the CPU should be avarage, but notthing more. Just take a look at the Dell Inspiron serie. They are to light for real development, but excellent for presentations, etc.

I picked up a Dell XPS M1210 a couple of months ago and it rocks.

It is a 12 inch model and weighs about 5 pounds (small, but solid).

I got mine for about $1400 on the referb site.

- 2 gigs of Ram, 256 mb video, dual core duo, etc.

Feel free to ping me at scottwater@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Thanks,

I'd go for something small and lightweight, with 2 GB of memory (Or 1 GB of memory on a single stick, so you can upgrade later) and core duo. I have a fairly massive laptop with a wide screen, but it's my primary development machine. I wouldn't worry about a lot of video memory, if it's a machine you're going to mostly be using for presentations.

Hey Jeff A., any recommendations on an ASUS reseller that allows customization, such as upgrading the hard drive speed?

Hey Scott W., you don't do development on the 12 incher, do you?

If you get a Dell I would suggest Googling for coupon codes. I was able to save about $400 on my E1505. I've had it about 8 months and its a solid machine. 1GB RAM, CorDuo, etc..

I cannot find the story, but the other day I saw a Mac laptop in Tablet PC form factor. Now I know that you may be a Windows person, but I am considering the Mac just because it has the emulators to run everything else.

Just a thought.

Where I work we have people in the field and these users use the ThinkPad (T60 series).

From everything I've heard these laptops are very reliable. We have very few problems out of them especially considering the abuse they receive from these users. :D

Hey Scott, interesting subject, I have a couple of 4 year old sony desktops that are starting to feel their age. I had ruled laptops out, because I really wanted to feel the "need for speed" with my next machine. Can you really do hardcore development on a laptop as your main dev machine?

Def keep us up to date on what you decide.

Sometimes. I traveled about 50K miles year with a 17inch laptop. I would have gladly given up the screen space better mobility.

Most of the dev I do on the laptop is prototyping and reviewing. For "regular" coding I either plug the laptop into the KVM or use a desktop (with 2 monitors).
