What Programs Do You have Running 24x7?

I saw a post yesterday on weblogs.asp.net, I believe, where a poor soul had forgotten to keep Outlook running and therefore hadn't been reminded of a few tasks he had added to Outlook's Calendar.  That got me thinking: what computer programs do most folks have running all the time?  I doubt most computer users have a certain set of programs that are always running (my parents, for example, turn their computer on whenever they need to use it and back off when they're done), but developers usually have their computers running 24x7, if not for the entire workday.  So, during your computer's uptime, what programs are running throughout?

Here are mine:

  • Outlook
  • Explorer
  • .NET Framework SDK Documentation
  • Trillian
  • FeedDemon (been trying it out for a few days now; will probably post a review eventually)
  • Visual Studio
  • SQL Server Enterprise Manager
  • SQL Query Analyzer
  • UltraEdit
  • Mozilla FireFox

When I take off for a couple of days, like on the weekends, I'll shut down Visual Studio and SQL, but the above are pretty much running 24x7.

At work, Outlook is always open, except when I close it by mistake.

SharpReadrer at work and at home, runs on startup and I rarely close it.

The google deskbar if it counts.

Messenger, but at home it is usualy my girlfriend who is signed in, not me.

Everything else I close on a regular basis, but VS.Net, Explorer and IE tend to get reopened wthout much delay.

I never have the MSDN Doc open, I use the online version + Google.

Scott,

What do you use UltraEdit for since you have Visual Studio and Query Analyzer which should handle all of your programming needs.

Brian, I use UltraEdit because I think it's a killer text editor. If I need to edit an HTML page, search for a regular expression pattern in a number of files on the file system, compare two files, etc., I find UltraEdit to be far superior to Notepad and the Visual Studio IDE.

I particularly like column-selection, the hex view, the ability to color-code text files based on a number of formats (XML/HTML/JavaScript/VB/C#/Perl/etc.), the low memory usage (I can have dozens of files open and it takes up what, maybe 10MB tops), the ability to open/save files from/to an FTP site, spell checking, etc.

I use Visual Studio for code files, as VS has IntelliSense, but for the times I need to just read/update a text file, I find I am way more efficient and productive with UltraEdit.

Besides instant messengers, I always run Desktop Sidbar (http://www.desktopsidebar.com) which I got addicted to. It nicely hooks to your Outlook profile and displays tasks, calendar entries, etc. The nice thing is you don't even have to run Outlook to see all this. It also displays weather from weather.com (no annoying ads), and usage of system resources so I can see which process bogs down my system.
