Tips for Giving a Presentation

Stumbled across Scott Hanselman's blog entry, "Tips for a Successful MSFT Presentation."  This blog entry was from January 2003, but is totally worth reading if you give talks or plan on giving talks.

I am no expert on giving technical presentations, my experience being limited to the classroom setting, a handful of user group presentations over the years, and an ASP.NET conference.  Does anyone know of a Web site for technical presenters similar to ScottOnWriting.NET?

Scott's presenting tips are indeed excellent, though there is one small area where I would differ with him. One of his tips is that he keeps a separate user profile set up just for demos. I do the same thing, but I do NOT set that user up as an administrator.

As readers of my blog are probably well aware by now, I'm trying very hard to set a good example by running as a regular user when writing, coding, and speaking. Not only does this reduce my exposure to security problems, the little hiccups and problems that I run into make for useful tips during presentations.

Andrew, that is some great advice for writing as well! In general, it is always best to try to do your testing/exploring in the environment you expect your readers/listeners to be participating in. Nothing worse than showing a demo where you are an administrator, and having everyone ooh and ah, only to have them go home and try it and run into a bevy of security-related issues! :-)
