CyberAtlas has a short piece on blog statistics worth checking out. One statistic worth noting is that only 4% of the online community even reads blogs, while only 2% of the online community has created a blog. I would expect these numbers to grow as blogging becomes more pervasive.
Also worth checking out is Dave Pollard's Secret of Breakout Blogs. In this piece, Dave discusses what he views as the three most important aspects for creating an extremely popular and trafficked blog. To quote the article:
- A memorable theme or style or some other attribute that gives your blog 'stickiness', so people remember it and come back regularly after they see it the first time,
- A well-tested and consistent writing process that has been proven to build allegiance and regular readers, and
- An infectious quality that leads readers to recommend your blog to their readers in words that their readers relate to.
I have some random thoughts on blogs, blog stickiness, and the utility of technical/informational blogs that I plan on espousing on in some future entry.
