Scott on Writing

Musings on technical writing...

www.DotNetToolbox.com, not www.AspNetToolbox.com

Back in August 2003, I created a site called - at the time - AspNetToolbox.com [see this old blog entry].  The aim of this site was to serve as reviews for free must-have ASP.NET tools, programs, applications, etc.  I later enlarged the scope to .NET in general, and aptly renamed the site to DotNetToolbox.com.  Recently the www.aspnettoolbox.com domain name expired, and I didn't bother renewing it.  However, I have received a few emails, and even a blog comment, asking what's up.  Sorry if I hadn't made it clearer in the past, but the site is live and running, just use www.DotNetToolbox.com instead...

In any event, I'm always looking for folks who are interested in writing a quick review of a free .NET tool they find they can't live without, one that helps them in their development, be it WinForms apps, Web applications, or Web services.  If you are interested in contributing to DotNetToolbox.com, drop me a line.

That was close... A couple of months ago I registered AspNetTools.com, a domain name to resemble my AspNetResources.com.

On a similar note, if you browse around whois you'll see a lot of ASP.NET related domains registered a couple of years ago, but there no web sites there. What were people thinking?

Milan, probably a number of people who wanted to create sites about ASP.NET, but, for whatever reason - lack of motivation, job schedule, lost interest, etc. - they did not carry through. I wouldn't be surprised to see another rash of things with the upcoming release of 2.0 (Although I doubt it would be nearly as pronounced as when ASP.NET first came out...)

Scott

Are you aware that the RSS Feed from DotNetToolbox.com still contains links to "aspnet.toolbox.com"?

Looking at the contents of http://www.dotnettoolbox.com/toolbox/Rss.aspx I see this. Look at the link element...
Thanks!

If so, check out <a href="http://www.denisbauer.com/Default.aspx">Dennis Bauer</a>'s free ASP.NET Version Switcher. It provides an easy-to-use Windows desktop application that you can use to quickly specify what version of the .NET Framework various Web applications should use.<p>(Internally, the ASP.NET Version Switcher uses the <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cptools/html/cpgrfASPNETIISRegistrationToolAspnet_regiisexe.asp"><code>aspnet_regiis.exe</code> tool</a> to switch the versions; the ASP.NET Version Switcher, essentially, is a easy-to-use, GUI front-end to this command-line application.)
