The Hardest Part of Writing a Book

For me, the hardest part of writing a book is... getting started.  The first chapter always seems infinitely more difficult to write and takes far more time than any of the remainding chapters.  And, for that first chapter, the first paragraph of that first chapter can sometimes take hours.  Hours!  My initial attempts never fail to go something like this:

  1. Open Word,
  2. Write the title of the chapter at the top,
  3. Start to write the first sentence of the first paragraph of the chapter.
  4. Write a few sentences.
  5. Delete sentences written in step (4).
  6. Return to step (3).

This process is usually repeated until I get too frustrated and play Solitaire or, if I'm really frustrated, trek downstairs to play some Return to Castle Wolfenstein on XBOX Live (that never fails to pick up the ol' spirits).

This process is usually made even more frustrating because I already have, in the noggin', decided how I want some part of this chapter to look, but I really want to start from the beginning.  Eventually, I capitulate and decide to just start writing a sentence in the middle of some paragraph somewhere in the middle of the chapter.  And then it flows from there, usually.  It takes a few days, sometimes a couple of weeks, before I'm back into the writing flow, churning out 10-20 on days I write, but prior to “getting in the zone” I am happy to put out one or two pages in a day's time.  Meh.

(If you couldn't guess, I recently, as of this week, started working on another book.... Details to follow once I get back in the zone.....)

I have always experienced the same problem, the beginning is always the toughest. I find the same is true for me with articles as well, one technique I have used is move ahead to something I feel ready to write.. then come back to the introduction, or first paragraph.

Wow. Yet another confirmation that I'm not alone in this.

If it's any consolation, writing is hard work, harder than most people realize. And those of us who do it more than once? We must be gluttons for punishment. ;-)

This latest book is aimed for total newbies, it's not even server-side Web development related. So........... hopefully it will be easier and go faster! :-)

But, yes, writing books is a masochistic endeavor, especially considering the pay is fairly ho-hum.

Heh. You might find the following interesting and/or amusing:

"It's such a pain to write books, it's such a bother to go through the publishing process -- what kind of person is willing to put him/herself through this? Answer: a very narrow demographic -- the obsessed and the ambitious. Exceptions allowed for (hi Hugo!), this would seem to mean that most of the books we've interacted with over the years have been written by people who are nuts. Let's grant that a few of these nutcases have talent and brains -- still: funny, no?"

Really tough, especially for a first timer who is trying to enter a competition! If I can't get started what'll I do! Thanks for your tips.

On a short course about giving speechs,
we learnt a method that deals with the problem starting by the middle, following by the end a nd finishing by the start.
The start is the most important part of a speech, it must get the attention of your auditory.
In the case of articles I started to use the same technique, with decent results.
I think you need to work it a little more for a book, but it can be helpful

Diego, yes, I've used this approach before. If I get stuck starting a certain section of a book, or even a certain paragraph, I just say, "Screw it," and start writing the middle. I mean, I know what I want to convey in the section/chapter/paragraph, but I don't know how to start it off...
