I've Joined the Twenty-First Century - Dual Monitors at Last!

While I wouldn't label myself a Luddite (seeing as I'm a software developer by trade!), I am pretty far from the cutting edge. I recently joined this century, however, by upgrading my work environment to include dual monitors, a move I've been meaning to do over the past several years but have never gotten around to it for a variety of reasons. I've heard/read of the benefits[1][2][3], and my wife's been telling me how proficient she is with her dual monitor setup at work..... I guess it's a mix of laziness and cheapness that keeps me fairly wed to the status quo. I think I'd be a good Buddhist, since my desire for material items and “stuff” is pretty much nil.

Anywho, after enough years of kicking around the idea I decided this past weekend to take the plunge and go dual monitor. We went to Frys to see about getting another video card (since mine only has a single output) and matching monitor. Sadly, they weren't selling the monitor I had purchased from the store a year or two ago (a Sharp LCD 17” LL-172C-B), but I did pick up the same video card (except a PCI one, versus the original AGP one), a cheap-o GeForce 4000 MX, about $50.

Sadly, Sharp doesn't appear to be making the same monitor I had, but I found a site where I could buy a refurbished one for about half of what a new one would cost. I'm always a bit concerned when buying used/refurbished electronic equipment, but this monitor looks and behaves brand new. Setting up the dual monitors is fairly easy (I'm using Windows 2003). The only part that wasn't straightforward was in installing the video card. Once I installed it, the BIOS thought that the PCI card was the main video output, but Windows thought the AGP card was the video output. What happened was that the monitor plugged into the AGP slot wouldn't show anything and the one in the PCI slot would show the startup screen when turning the computer on, but would go blank once Windows had loaded. The fix was to go into the BIOS editor and set the primary display channel from PCI back to AGP.

And now I have two monitors! I've just been using this setup for a couple of days. I can't say how much of a real productivity boost there is, though. It's nice to have the two monitors, don't get me wrong, but I'm just not sure if, for what I do, two is any quicker than one. The only thing that seems to be a bit quicker is debugging, since I can have VS.NET on one screen and a browser in the other, which helps with interacting with the page/stepping through lines of code in the debugger.

Pardon the gunk on the keyboard, I need to clean that off one of these days.

Right now I'm trying out UltraMon, which adds a lot of nice features for dual monitor support, such as extending the task bar, providing buttons in the Windows title bar to quickly stretch windows across screens or move it from one screen to another, and so on.

Now that I've got two monitors, I'm wondering if it's worth it to go for three......  :-)

Jaiks!
And I'll stick to my 24" Dell, less head turns.

The weird thing is that a 24 incher works a lot different than two separate screens. Maximizing a window on a 24 inch screen is useless, too much wasted space. Having a dedicated SQL Server Management Studio screen and a Visual Studio screen feels more efficient.

Now go clean your keyboard and mouse pad (btw, oldskool keyboard, I like the sound it makes).

This multiple monitors thing is getting out of hand.

I went from not being able to function with two, to not being able to function with three, and now I am dependent on four.

My head lives on a swivel. Now I need to go from 17" to 19", but then I'm sure 19" will become 21", then 24". When will it end?

Anyway, welcome to the current century...

Ew. Ew. Ew.

Get a new keyboard, for the love of pete! I recommend this one:

That's one reason why multiple monitors is, in some ways, better than a single giant monitor. Each monitor is a "workspace", so you maximize to that workspace. And UltraMon lets me drag maximized windows to a particular LCD. It's kind of like the "throwing" UI in Minority Report, but without the weird Michael Jackson glove interface. ;)

To be honest, Jeff, the gunk on the keyboard looks 10x worse in the picture than in real life. Now the mouse pad, that's another story. I'm using the same mousepad since 1998, one of a limited number of 4GuysFromRolla.com mousepads. Having been in good use for nearly eight years, having been moved across multiple time zones, and having been moved from dorm to apartment to apartment to condo, you can imagine it's not the world's most pristine mousepad.

It keeps my wife off my computer. ;-) And I imagine it will eventually help ensure my kids stay away from my computer (assuming I have daughters).

Scott -- 17" monitors? Come on, man! If you're going to step up, go all out! What resolution do you like to run? I suppose that has an impact on the monitor size you care to buy.

I have dual monitors and although I don't use the secondary monitor all that much, when I do have a need for it, it is a blessing.

I think that depends on the application. I occasionally use apps such as Flash and Paint Shop Pro and the 24" monitor is an absolute dream. For everything else, I just run the app in a windowed mode and I still end up sizing it to about 1600x1200, which is better than most 19" monitors can give you.

I completely agree with Jeff's suggestion on the keyboard. I have the Microsoft Ergo 4000 myself and it rocks.

Mousepads are old school too. I use a Logitech laser MX 1000 cordless mouse. Fits my hand beautifully and doesn't a pad. Just a smooth surface. I recommend this mouse over any Microsoft's.

dethwalker, I run at 1280x1024 on both monitors.

abdu, I have a Microsoft optical mouse, so I really don't need to mousepad, it's more for sentimental reasons.

You'll order the third very soon. After getting two I could only imagine how much better 3 17" LCD's would be, and IT IS AWESOME!

Next big project we complete I want to get 3 20" and run them vertically, just imagine almost no scrolling on the code pages.

I'm in the same boat as a post above.. first two wasn't enough, and now three doesn't give me enough (http://www.morningz.com/Upload/gadgets/monitor_setup.jpg), but it'll do :-)

Congrats on the new setup, totally agree with the "easier to debug" thing

I had a dual 21" at my last job and loved it. At my new gig I've begged, cajoled, sent articles on productivity gains, and sent a blog by Bill Gates himself raving about multi-monitor setup, all to no avail.

Triple 19's for me. To be honest though I could live with 2 but 3 gives hall walkers a serious case of monitor envy! :)

Scott, how can you write your books without dual monitors? I have the word processor on the main monitor with the software on the secondary monitor. Previously, I would tab back and forth into oblivion when referencing screen shots and menu items. What a waste of time. Dual monitors is the only way to go!!!

Now I'm worried that a year from now you going to tell us how you finally started using VMWare. With all the software you test/review, I hope you're using virtual machines to keep your main computer from getting bogged down. :-)

Question: Do you know if you could play World of Warcraft or some other full screen game on one screen and read your blog on the other???

For those people concerned with my hygene, fear not, I've replaced my keyboard! I ended up getting a black USB Microsoft natural keyboard to go along with my black wireless optical Microsoft mouse (both highly recommended... the mouse moreso than the keyboard).

I recently got my <a href="http://www.shanghaitechwriter.com/2008/06/13/dual-monitor-setup-to-increase-productivity/">dual-monitor setup</a> at work and it's definitely increased my productivity.
